The History of the Walk of Fame
The Walk of Fame was the brainchild of E.M. Stuart, who was the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s volunteer president in 1953. The idea was intended to reinforce the glitter and glamor that surrounded the stars of the entertainment industry – the famous actors, actresses, recording artists, radio personalities, and musicians.
In 1958, after lots of controversy surrounding the selection process, the eight stars that started it all were revealed on Hollywood Boulevard. Some names are still well-known today, and some aren’t as recognizable. They included:
- Olive Borden
- Ronald Colman
- Louise Fazenda
- Preston Foster
- Burt Lancaster
- Edward Sedgwick
- Ernest Torrence
- Joanne Woodward
Today, big names from the film, television, recording, and live theatre industries are all honored on the Walk of Fame, which now has over 2,000 stars.
